Questions. The awkward ones first.
- Does it phone home?
-
Two requests go to a server of mine, and nothing else does.
Unlocking your key sends the key itself with a one-way code for the machine, and gets back a file that is kept in your Windows profile. From then on each launch checks that file instead, without sending your key again. It is good for a year. If the server cannot be reached, the key unlocks anyway for seven days, and Motive asks again each time it starts until the server answers.
Then, once per launch and about half a minute in, it asks the server whether your key has moved to another PC. That request carries a short licence reference and the same one-way code: not the key, no filename, no folder, nothing about what you play. If it cannot reach the server, nothing changes and the app carries on. The same check renews the year once the unlock file is inside its last two months, so in normal use unlocking is a one-time thing.
No analytics, no crash reports, and nothing about your library or what you play is sent to me.
- What else leaves my PC?
-
Only what you open. A forum post or a page you open inside Motive loads from its own site under your own signed-in session, the way a browser would. A script fetched from a source you added yourself comes from that source. If you switch on Share my library for the headset, Motive serves your library on your local network, with no password, so any device on that network can reach it while sharing is on.
- What if I never let it online again?
It keeps working for the year, then seven days more, then falls back to the free build until a launch that reaches the server, which unlocks it again straight away. Your key and your settings are untouched either way.
- Does it work without a device?
Yes. It is a complete video player with a heat strip of the script. The device parts wake up when one is connected.
- Does it download the post's video?
No. It plays the host's own stream and feeds the device from it. Direct links, Dropbox, Pixeldrain and the forum's own uploads work; tube embeds you press yourself.
- Can I keep my scripts and videos where they are?
Yes. Add your folders, Motive scans them and matches scripts by name. It does not include any video or any script; you bring your own.
- Does it change my script files?
Only if you ask it to. Depth, speed, offset, combos and the custom axes are all live: they shape what goes to the device and leave the file alone. Regenerate is the one part that writes a script, and it writes a new file.
- What does the free build actually do?
It plays. Library, scripts to any supported device, posts in place, headset, Screen and EDI, labels, one custom axis. A key lifts the caps on depth and speed, unlocks every custom axis, combos per label, the motion presets and the other thirteen skins. The pricing page has it row by row.
- Is there an installer?
No. You unzip a folder and run the
.exe. Nothing is installed, nothing is written to your registry, and nothing runs at startup.- Windows says it protected my PC. Is that a problem?
No. The first time you run Motive, Windows may show Windows protected your PC. Click More info, then Run anyway. Motive is not code-signed, so this warning is expected. Windows asks once per download, so again after an update.
- How many machines can I use my key on?
One, and you can move it: the first move is free, after that once every 30 days. Moving means pasting your key on the new machine; there is nothing to deactivate first. On a PC you are leaving for good, use Take the key off this PC in Settings, because a PC that still has the key saved takes it back if Motive is opened there once a move is allowed again. If it ever refuses when it should not, write with your order ID and I will clear it the same day.
- I have two PCs. Can I use it on both?
Buy a second key. One key runs on one PC at a time. You can add extra keys to the same order.
- Can I give one as a gift?
Yes, and you can check it works on your own PC first. The first move a key makes is free, so pasting it on theirs afterwards takes it straight over.
- I bought it. Where is my key?
On the order page right after payment, and in the email from the shop. Not there? Check spam. Still nothing? Write with your order ID.
- Windows only?
Yes, for now.
- How do I reach you?
Email support@motiveplayer.com. If it is about a key, include your order ID.
